Cervical Disc Herniation (Neck Hernia) – Causes and Treatment Methods

Cervical disc herniation occurs when the discs that separate and cushion the cervical vertebrae (neck vertebrae) slip out of place or rupture. The gel-like substance inside the disc (nucleus pulposus) can protrude through a tear in the outer layer, pressing on the spinal cord or nerves. This can cause symptoms such as pain, numbness, and weakness in the neck, shoulder, arm, and sometimes the hand.

Causes of Cervical Disc Herniation

  • Trauma or accidents
  • Degeneration due to aging
  • Maintaining poor posture for extended periods (e.g., leaning forward while working on a computer)
  • Lifting heavy objects suddenly
  • Genetic predisposition

Symptoms

  • Neck pain
  • Pain radiating to the shoulder and arm
  • Numbness and tingling in the fingers
  • Weakness in the hand or arm
  • Restricted range of motion

Treatment Methods

1. Conservative Treatment:

  • Medications (pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs)
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation
  • Use of a cervical collar
  • Exercise programs

2. Interventional Treatment:

  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Neural therapy

3. Surgical Treatment:

  • If nerve compression is severe and conservative treatments are ineffective, surgery may be required (e.g., discectomy or fusion).

With early diagnosis and treatment, most patients can recover without needing surgery. Your support as a physiotherapist plays a vital role in the treatment process!
