What is Tennis Elbow? Causes, Symptoms, and the Role of Physiotherapy

Lateral Epicondylitis, commonly known as tennis elbow, is a condition characterized by pain and tenderness on the outer part of the elbow (lateral epicondyle region). This condition typically arises due to microtrauma caused by overuse or repetitive movements of the forearm muscles.

Causes
• Repetitive hand and wrist movements (e.g., racket sports, writing, typing, woodworking).
• Overloading of muscles and tendons. • Sports activities performed with improper technique.

Symptoms
• Pain and tenderness on the outer part of the elbow.
• Increased pain during activities like gripping, lifting weights, or holding objects.
• Weakness in the forearm and difficulty with movements.

Role of Physiotherapy

In lateral epicondylitis, physiotherapy is a key approach to reduce pain, strengthen muscles, and improve functional capacity.

Physiotherapy Methods

  1. Pain Control
    • Cold Therapy
    • Manual Therapy
  2. Increase Muscle Strength and Flexibility
  3. Posture and Biomechanical Training
  4. Functional Recovery

Alongside physiotherapy, appropriate rest and avoiding aggravating activities are important for managing the condition.
