In this message, I’d like to share with you insights about manual therapy, the importance of our core stabilization muscles, and my YÖK-approved master’s thesis study.

What is manual therapy?

Manual therapy is a hands-on treatment approach performed by trained healthcare professionals to assess and improve the function of the musculoskeletal system. It includes techniques such as joint mobilizations, manipulations, and soft tissue methods.

This approach supports the body’s natural function, enhances joint mobility, and accelerates tissue self-repair processes. It can provide relief in cases such as neck and lower back stiffness, upper back tension, nerve impingements due to disc herniation, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, muscle spasms, and certain hearing-related issues.

What is the core region?

The core area is the center of our body and functions to stabilize the trunk while the arms and legs move during functional movements. The importance of the core area is related to its function, that is, to protect the spine from excessive load and to transfer force from the lower body to the upper body.

Why is it important to strengthen our core muscles?

Posture mistakes that we constantly repeat in our daily lives without realizing it can cause permanent posture disorders over time. The only way to have a healthy posture is to strengthen the core muscles in a balanced way. The core muscles are responsible for keeping the spine upright and ensuring rotation of the spine. Since it is the spine in question, it is very important to strengthen it. The biggest supporters of our spine, which keeps us standing by carrying all the load throughout the day, are the core muscles. Therefore, by developing the muscle groups in this region, we can relieve the burden on our spine and prevent injuries by protecting our spine health.

What are the core muscles?

Let’s examine together what the core region muscles are;

Transversus abdominis: It is the abdominal muscle located deepest in the body. It covers the bottom of the ribcage from the front and back like a corset. It holds internal organs in place.

Obliques: These are the muscle groups located on the transversus. They shape the waist and enable lateral rotation of the body. They are divided into two: internal and external obliques. The external obliques extend in the opposite direction over the internal obliques.

Rectus abdominis: These are the muscles located at the outermost part of the abdominal area. These muscles swell especially with crunches.

Multifidus and Erector Spinae: These muscles are responsible for keeping the spine erect and rotating throughout the waist and neck region.

EFFECT OF LUMBAR REGION MANIPULATION ON CORE STABILIZATION IN HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS

Now that we have learned how important our core stabilization muscles are, I would like to briefly tell you about my master’s thesis topic. In my study with 60 healthy individuals, I created 30 experimental and 30 control groups. The strength of core stabilization muscles was measured with the CTT centaur device. Afterwards, Modified Schober Test, Fingertip-Floor Distance Test, Sit-Ups Endurance Test, Normal Joint Range of Motion Evaluation, Plank Test, Functional Leg Length Evaluation and Derifield-Thompson Leg Check Test were performed on all subjects. Lumbar region manipulation was performed on the experimental group twice, 1 week apart. No manipulation was performed on the control group. After the procedures, the strength and flexibility of the core stabilization muscles in group 2 were measured again, and the core stabilization muscles of the experimental group (the manipulated group) were determined to be significantly more flexible and stronger. In conclusion; It has been demonstrated that lumbar region manipulation has a positive effect on core stabilization muscles.

Emre Yaz

This content is for informational purposes only.
