{"id":11194,"date":"2026-01-03T15:59:33","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T12:59:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.atlasterapi.com\/en\/?p=11194"},"modified":"2026-01-03T16:00:41","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T13:00:41","slug":"ischemic-compression-how-and-why-it-works-in-trigger-point-therapy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.atlasterapi.com\/en\/ischemic-compression-how-and-why-it-works-in-trigger-point-therapy\/","title":{"rendered":"Ischemic Compression: How and Why It Works in Trigger Point Therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"150\"><strong data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"24\">Ischemic Compression<\/strong> is a manual therapy technique commonly used in the treatment of painful muscle points known as trigger points (muscle knots).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"152\" data-end=\"380\">Its basic principle is to apply controlled pressure to the painful area for a specific period, temporarily restricting blood flow, and then releasing the pressure to create a surge of blood flow to the area (a \u201cwashout\u201d effect).<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"387\" data-end=\"412\">How Is It Applied?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"414\" data-end=\"460\">The application generally follows these steps:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"462\" data-end=\"591\"><strong data-start=\"462\" data-end=\"495\">Trigger Point Identification:<\/strong><br data-start=\"495\" data-end=\"498\" \/>The most sensitive and tense point in the muscle (the trigger point) is located by palpation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"593\" data-end=\"794\"><strong data-start=\"593\" data-end=\"618\">Pressure Application:<\/strong><br data-start=\"618\" data-end=\"621\" \/>Using the thumb, knuckle, or a specialized massage tool, vertical pressure is applied to this point according to the patient\u2019s pain tolerance (usually around 7\u20138 out of 10).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"970\"><strong data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"814\">Holding Phase:<\/strong><br data-start=\"814\" data-end=\"817\" \/>The pressure is maintained steadily for approximately 30 to 90 seconds. During this time, temporary ischemia (reduced blood supply) occurs in the tissue.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"972\" data-end=\"1101\"><strong data-start=\"972\" data-end=\"984\">Release:<\/strong><br data-start=\"984\" data-end=\"987\" \/>The pressure is suddenly released. The body rapidly sends fresh blood and oxygen to the area (reactive hyperemia).<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1108\" data-end=\"1132\">Why Does It Work?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1214\">Several biological mechanisms explain the effectiveness of ischemic compression:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1216\" data-end=\"1408\"><strong data-start=\"1216\" data-end=\"1241\">Improved Oxygenation:<\/strong><br data-start=\"1241\" data-end=\"1244\" \/>Trigger points often remain contracted continuously and become deprived of oxygen.
