It is most often caused by neurological or vestibular system disorders. In recent years, there has been growing interest in the effects of holistic approaches like manual therapy and atlas therapy on nystagmus symptoms.

Underlying Mechanisms of Nystagmus

Key causes of nystagmus include inner ear problems (particularly vestibular system disorders), cerebellar dysfunctions, cervical spine issues, and cranial nerve damage. Biomechanical imbalances in the head and neck region can impair the function of these structures and trigger nystagmus.

The concept of cervicogenic nystagmus is especially important here. Dysfunction in the upper cervical spine (C0-C1-C2) and surrounding structures can disrupt proprioceptive input, leading to incorrect signals in the vestibular system and consequently abnormal eye movements.

Effects of Manual Therapy

Manual therapy involves interventions such as joint mobilization, soft tissue techniques, and nerve mobilization to influence the musculoskeletal system. Applications targeting the upper cervical region can improve spinal alignment and reduce pressure on the nervous system.

Resolving movement restrictions and myofascial tensions in cervical segments can help restore healthy proprioceptive flow. This supports a more balanced function of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). Clinical observations have shown that in some individuals, the severity of nystagmus and complaints such as dizziness are reduced after manual therapy.

The Role of Atlas Therapy

Atlas therapy specifically aims to correct positional misalignments of the C1 vertebra (atlas). Since the atlas maintains balance between the head and the spine, misalignments here can affect the entire craniovertebral region.

A misaligned atlas may disrupt blood flow through the vertebral arteries, causing circulation issues in the brainstem and vestibular nuclei. Furthermore, abnormal stimulation of mechanoreceptors can create adaptation problems in the central nervous system, triggering involuntary eye movements.

When balance is restored in the atlas region, proprioceptive signals normalize and stress on the central system is reduced. This can, in some cases, lead to a decrease in the frequency and intensity of nystagmus.

Scientific Studies

Studies directly investigating the effects of manual therapy and atlas therapy on nystagmus are still limited. However, some research on cervical spine manipulations and their effects on the vestibular system shows promising results.

In particular, some pilot studies suggest that manual therapy applied to the cervical region may improve the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). Additionally, evidence indicating that atlas alignment affects autonomic nervous system functions suggests that these approaches could indirectly reduce nystagmus symptoms.

Considering vestibular problems originating from the cervical spine, it’s important to recognize the potential supportive role of manual and atlas therapies.

Nystagmus is a condition characterized by involuntary eye movements, which can significantly impact quality of life.
